2020 has started in the worst way possible. Not only is the global economy still trying to figure out how to deal with Covid-19, but more and more Chinese companies find themselves in the spotlight of short-sellers and regulators.

In December 2019, Wolfpack Research called Qutoutiao, Tencent’s content aggregation platform, a “low-tech, cash incinerating malware distributor.”

In February, Grizzly Research called out 58.com, “China’s Craiglist”, as an accounting house of cards with little economic substance. That same month, Grizzly calls GSX Techedu, an online education platform, the worst publicly traded education company.

In April, Wolfpack Research releases a short-selling report accusing iQiyi of exaggerating revenue. iQiyi’s share prices fall 11.2% Tuesday morning before bouncing back to gain 3.2% by market close.  That same month, TAL, an online tutoring platform, says that one of their employees may have inflated sales figures.

How much can we trust American short sellers? How much can we trust Chinese companies? Can we expect any more fraud admissions or accusations?
