Dong Mingzhu, CEO of major appliance manufacturer Gree and a deputy of the National People’s Congress, suggested that more attention should be given to issues around overwork in China, during an interview with a state-affiliated media at this year’s Two Sessions. Dong suggested that the Chinese government should formulate restraint measures and a supervision mechanism that will prevent companies from implementing illegal overtime schedules. She also noted that companies should flexibly formulate national holidays with the consent of employees. The notorious “996” working schedule, working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week, was deemed illegal by China’s Supreme Court in August last year. [JCRB, in Chinese]
