TSMC will get as much as $3.5 billion from the Japanese government to build new wafer factories that will ensure stable production volume, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced on June 17, Caixin reported. The funding is a joint venture between TSMC and METI, as well as Sony and automaker Denso. According to METI, the new factory will cost $8.6 billion to build, and will cost more once production starts. Japan’s government will offer financial aid through direct funding and loans according to a release on METI’s website.
