Two senior US senators have called on the federal government to investigate TikTok concerning data security requirements in the country. This development follows a Buzzfeed report which said that “US user data has been repeatedly accessed from China,” where TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is headquartered. The company responded on Tuesday, saying it has been bolstering measures to protect user data, including establishing a US-based security team to supervise access to data by China-based employees. In June, the social media app said that it had completed migrating private user data to Oracle’s US servers from its own data centers. [Reuters]
