ByteDance’s hugely popular short-video platform TikTok is developing “Project Texas,” an initiative to isolate the sensitive data of US users and make it available only to American staff, in an attempt to allay security concerns, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew told the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore on Nov. 16. In partnership with Oracle, the project will see US user data originally stored on TikTok transferred to Oracle’s cloud infrastructure. Chew added that the project is “extremely difficult and expensive to build,” but that he is confident that it will address the US government’s security concerns. TikTok has received severe criticism from US officials who believe that the company has been sharing US user data with entities in China, a claim that TikTok has denied. [Bloomberg]
