Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba plans to cultivate 200,000 new live streamers and 10,000 live streaming accounts in key industries and sectors, Alibaba’s Taobao Live announced on Thursday. The platform is facing fierce competition in live commerce from rivals like Douyin and Kuaishou. The platform also plans to divert extra traffic to help grow those accounts. Each livestream account can win up to 3 million users in traffic. Meanwhile, popular Chinese stand-up comedian Li Dan recently set up his own live e-commerce channel on Taobao, with his first appearance on Dec. 10, ahead of the Dec. 12 shopping festival — another year-end shopping deals day. Local media outlet Jiemian said brands like Volvo and Gucci are currently discussing with Li. Taobao has previously attracted tech celebrity Luo Yonghao to livestream on its platform, part of its ongoing strategy of attracting high-profile celebrities to boost live commerce sales.
