The Game Awards (TGA) revealed its winners for 2022 on Dec. 9, with major Chinese gaming firms among those recognized. The list of nominees and winners suggests Chinese gaming giants’ advantages lie in mobile platform and esports titles. Although they were eventually beaten by Marvel Snap, four of the five titles nominated in the Best Mobile Game category were affiliated with Chinese firms: Tencent and EA’s Apex Legends Mobile, NetEase and Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo Immortal, Tower of Fantasy from Perfect World’s Hotta Studio, and Genshin Impact from Shanghai-headquartered HoYoverse. Genshin Impact ultimately took away the Players’ Voice Award instead. Tencent’s animation adaption Arcane: League of Legends won the Best Adaption Award, rewarding its efforts to enriching its content universe. The gaming giant also won an award for its esports event, the 2022 League of Legends World Championship. FromSoftware, the developer behind 2022’s Game of the Year Elden Ring, was also invested in by Tencent and Sony in August this year. [TGA]
