Chipmaker TSMC is considering setting up its first European plant in Dresden, Germany, according to a Dec. 23 report from the Financial Times. The Taiwanese chipmaker plans to send a team of senior executives to Germany early next year to discuss government support and to review the scope of local supply chain capacity. If TSMC does go forward with the plant, it will focus on 22 nm and 28 nm chips, similar to the plant it is currently developing in Japan, the report said. The chipmaker is also weighing whether such a plant will further stretch its workforce, as it has already sent hundreds of engineers to support new plants in the US. [Financial Times]
