China will set up a data regulator to coordinate the sharing, development, and use of data, according to a plan submitted to the National People’s Congress on Tuesday. The plan will streamline data storage and processes involving data privacy in a new bureau administered by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), in an area that had been the responsibility of multiple regulatory bodies, including the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and NDRC.
