The global smartphone market declined 12% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2023, marking a fifth consecutive quarter of decline, according to market analysis firm Canalys. Chinese smartphone manufacturers Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo ranked third, fourth, and fifth for shipments, respectively. Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia noted that despite price cuts and aggressive promotions from phone brands, customer demand has receded due to high inflation. Xiaomi’s share of global first-quarter shipments dropped from 13% in 2022 to 11% in 2023. Oppo’s 10% share was slightly higher than last year’s 9%, while Vivo’s 8% share was unchanged year-on-year. The report indicates that Xiaomi’s ranking benefited from new products launched at the end of Q1 and ongoing inventory adjustments, while Oppo and Vivo have strengthened their positions in the domestic and Asia-Pacific markets.
