Tesla’s founder and CEO Elon Musk delivered a video speech at the opening ceremony of the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) held on July 6 in Shanghai, during which he praised China’s AI prowess, saying, “I admire the Chinese people’s wisdom and determination. As long as the Chinese people decide to do well in one thing, they will, including in AI.” Musk further predicted that with the rapid development of AI technology, Tesla would achieve full self-driving capabilities by the end of this year. “In terms of where Tesla is at this stage, I think we are very close to achieving full self-driving without human supervision,” Musk said. “This is only speculation, but I think we’ll achieve full self-driving, maybe what you would call level four or five [two of the most advanced levels of autonomous driving technology], I think later this year,” he added. Despite his previous timeline predictions being missed, the Twitter owner added: “I feel like we’re closer to it than we ever have been.” [TechNode China, in Chinese]
