After logging more than 5 million kilometres of testing, Changan Automobile has been granted China’s first official license plate dedicated to Level 3 autonomous driving, as China moves to advance regulation of the self-driving industry. The license plate, numbered Yu AD0001Z, was issued to Changan by the Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau’s Traffic Management Department. Changan began developing Level 3 autonomous driving technology in 2017 and, following years of technical accumulation, has tested its system for more than 5 million kilometres on complex roads in Chongqing, the company said. The tests covered 191 driving scenarios, with extreme conditions accounting for 36%, and were completed with zero accidents and zero violations, according to Changan. The approved vehicle model is the Deepal SL03, which will conduct pilot operations on designated routes, including Chongqing’s inner ring expressways. [Changan Automobile, in Chinese]
