Tech start-up entrepreneur’s and founder’s are in most cases male. Names like Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook, Sergey and Larry from Google and Peter Thiel and Elon Musk from PayPal usually take the spotlight when it come’s to entrepreneur’s who people look up to. But what about the ladies? In fact, there are a number of very successful female entrepreneur’s for girls to look up to.
To encourage more female entrepreneur’s to get a piece of the start-up action in China, Rails Girls Beijing is holding a class on Saturday December 15th to teach them how to code in Ruby on Rails for free. Be quick though, sign up applications close on Friday December 14th. You can sign up here in Chinese or here in English.
For some background, Rails Girls is an organization out of Finland that organizes two-day workshops giving women an introduction to Ruby on Rails, an open-source web framework. The movement has since spread around the world with events held in Finland, Singapore, America, India, Japan, Brazil etc.
Instructions will be available in both English and Chinese, depending on whatever works best for the group. They are hoping to accommodate 30 women, who will work in small groups of 4-6, depending on how many coaches they have on hand. You will need to bring your own laptop. The event is aimed at girls at any level of coding including no idea of coding!
Men can attend but you must be accompanied by an interested female and girls are of course given priority. If you are a Ruby Ninja and want to help coach the classes, that’s fine too. There will be 2 three hour workshops before the event to walk you through the curriculum.
If you’re still not totally clear on what happens at a Rails Girls workshop, take a look at their Beijing workshop schedule here or check out the video with a VPN from their event in Helsinki.
Mark Zuckerberg is from Facebook not Google, please get your facts straight.
