India has become an attractive market for mobile Internet companies thanks to its large user base. India’s mobile Internet users outnumbered PC users as of May 2012, chalking up 87 million at the end of 2012, according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India.
Indian Smartphone Market
Smartphone has outpaced feature phone to become the biggest drivers of mobile phone growth in India. India replaced Japan in the first quarter of this year as the world’s third largest smartphone market, just following China and the U.S., according to Strategy Analytics.
Samsung is still a dominating brand among Android phones and other popular brands include Sony, HTC and LG. Smartphones priced between $100 and $200 remained the mainstream devices, according to data from IDC.
User Behaviors on Mobile Browsers
Facebook and Google are the top two in terms of monthly page views in India, accounting for 60 percent and 7 percent of the total page views, respectively, according to data collected by UC Browser.
UC Browser hit the No. 1 spot in Indian mobile browser sector in the past July, recording a 30 percent market share from July 2012 to July 2013, according to statistics from StatCounter.
Downloading is the most popular activity. An interesting statistic to note is that Indian users prefer downloading videos over watching videos online: 71% of the respondents stated that they prefer downloading to streaming videos. Video watching is quite popular among Indian phone users, with 63 percent of the surveyed participants watch videos almost every day, according to research conducted by UC Browser. The average watching time per day was more than one hour as reported by 41% of the participants.
