What happened: Chinese electronics giant TCL plans to build a manufacturing plant in Tirupati, India. The park will be the companyโ€™s first overseas production unit of TCLโ€™s panel subsidiary, China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT). The company plans to produce up to 40 million TV and mobile phone screens of various sizes annually. The factory is expected to begin production at the end of 2019.

Why itโ€™s important: The panel factory in India is TCLโ€™s largest manufacturing base outside of China. It also marks the first step in CSOTโ€™s deployment into the overseas market as part of the companyโ€™s plan for semiconductor production. The Chinese electronics giant will leverage CSOTโ€™s advantages in smart manufacturing and product delivery, aiming at focusing on enterprises rather than consumer products only. India is the worldโ€™s third-largest TV market and has become one of the most important strategic markets for Chinese appliance manufacturers.
