Li Yinan, a former executive at Huawei and Baidu, launched a new electric vehicle brand called Niutron. He announced on Wednesday that the brand will begin delivering its first production model next September. Founded in late 2018, the company said it had raised $500 million in Series A from IDG Capital, Coatue, among other investors. Li is both an influential and controversial figure in China’s tech industry. In 2014, he co-founded Niu Technologies, a Chinese electric scooter firm that went public on Nasdaq four years later. In 2017, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for insider trading. [The Paper, in Chinese]
