ByteDance’s social lifestyle sharing app Lemon8, which has been compared to Xiaohongshu, has reached one million downloads in Japan after two years of operations, as reported by Chinese media outlet, LatePost. The TikTok owner plans to expand the service to Southeast Asian markets, and has already launched in Thailand. Chen Ying and Zhu Jun, former executives of Musical.ly, who joined the company after the popular short video app was acquired ByteDance in 2017, will oversee the business, the report said. In addition to ByteDance, Chinese local life app Meituan started testing social sharing features similar to Xiaohongshu’s in February this year, in an attempt to capitalize on China’s content-driven e-commerce boom.
