German auto parts supplier Bosch has invested an undisclosed sum in Chinese autonomous driving startup WeRide to develop advanced self-driving technology for consumer cars in China, the companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday. The partnership is the latest example of traditional auto companies strengthening their offerings against the backdrop of competition from Tesla and local electric vehicle makers in the world’s biggest auto market. WeRide has been backed by a group of big auto names such as Nissan and state-owned GAC, while rivals Pony.ai and Momentum have linked up with Toyota and General Motors, respectively.
