Chinese local life services platform Meituan is considering expanding into Hong Kong and overseas markets as the company’s business growth slows at home, Bloomberg reported on Saturday. The report added that Tony Qiu, a former international business leader at short video platform Kuaishou, was hired by Meituan earlier this year and will be in charge of the company’s international expansion. Meituan will first attempt to enter the food delivery market in Hong Kong, which is currently dominated by Foodpanda, Deliveroo, and Uber Eats. Meituan joins a list of prominent Chinese firms – including ByteDance and Pinduoduo – to plan or proactively pursue international expansion in recent months, as they face limited growth opportunities in China and continue to experience fall-out from the country’s regulatory crackdown on large tech companies.
