Global smartphone shipments fell 9% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022, the worst quarter since 2014, according to a new report released on Tuesday by Singapore market analysis firm Canalys. Major Chinese vendors Xiaomi, Oppo (including OnePlus), and Vivo together accounted for 33% of the global smartphone market by shipments in the third quarter of this year. However, while Xiaomi stood still with a market share of 14%, Oppo and Vivo saw slight yearly decreases in their global shipments during the period. Shipments by smartphone vendors Samsung and Apple led the way with 22% and 18% of the market share worldwide, respectively; the two firms’ shares of shipments also saw growth compared with the same period last year. Canalys cautioned that the overall downward trend in smartphone sales could continue for the next six to nine months due to the “gloomy economic outlook.” [Canalys]
