The studio of major Chinese e-commerce livestream star Li Jiaqi has denied reports that he sold RMB 21.5 billion ($2.9 billion) worth of goods on the first day of this year’s Singles Day pre-sales. Li’s agency Meiwan Shanghai Network Technology said the data had come from an unverified source and that a lawyer’s letter had been sent to the media who first published the “inaccurate” figure. Alibaba’s Taobao platform, where Li made the sales, also declined to release the total GMV of its livestreamers’ Singles Day pre-sale events. According to the e-commerce giant’s Tmall platform, L’Oreal, Lancome and Estee Lauder were the top three brands in its four-hour pre-sale window on Monday, three brands that were all featured prominently in Li Jiaqi’s live room.
