Baidu CEO Robin Li sees 2023 as a year to “do things” and asked Baidu staff to focus more on profit growth and return on investment instead of revenue, according to Chinese media outlet 36Kr’s account of a year-end meeting Li held with staff in December. Major Chinese content platforms have faced stagnant growth and falls in advertising revenue in 2022. Li reflected on a challenging past year and admitted that Baidu lacks a “star product” like Tencent’s short video platform WeChat Channels, despite spending more on research and development. Li said Baidu will keep trying to find opportunities to commercialize AI-generated content and commented that he hopes the company can transform one of its projects into a high-growth, innovative business.
