On Tuesday, Tencent super app WeChat blocked users from accessing links to ByteDance-owned short video app Douyin, according to local media outlet Yicai. Users were no longer able to access the TikTok sister app by clicking on or copying Douyin links within WeChat, though links to Alibaba’s online shopping platform Taobao continued to work. The problem was reportedly resolved on Wednesday. “In order to ensure user experience and protect user data security, WeChat has maintained strict and standardized management of external link content for a long time, and resolutely cracked down on special character sets, special logos, special codes, and various passwords that attempt to bait or harass users,” a spokesperson for WeChat told Yicai in response to its initial report. The blocking of links to rival platforms has traditionally been common practice within Chinese apps, though in 2021 Tencent and the country’s other tech majors said they would discuss better interconnection after pressure from the authorities.
