Chinese long-form video platform iQiyi is facing questions from the government-backed Shanghai Consumer Council for restricting access to high-definition screen casting among its paid membership. Previously, the platform’s Gold VIP member package supported the highest 4K resolution, but iQiyi recently adjusted its rules to allow subscribers to cast only the lowest 480P resolution onto TV screens unless they upgraded their membership package to get 4K casting for an additional fee. Prior to introducing this restriction, the Baidu-backed streaming platform increased subscription fees by as much as RMB 20 ($2.95) in December. “It is unreasonable for platforms to restrict consumers from casting screens, and even more unfriendly to charge additional fees for the casting feature,” the Shanghai Consumer Council said Friday on its WeChat account.
