Chinese digital navigation tool Amap, known in Chinese as Gaode Ditu, is set to merge with Alipay’s local services app Koubei, according to Chinese media outlet LatePost. The merger was reportedly announced at an internal Alibaba meeting on Wednesday with senior figures from Amap present including its president Yu Yongfu. The Koubei app, which also operated as a mini-app within Alipay, allowed users to look for local merchants, place orders, make payments, and write reviews. The platform, which was founded by Alibaba and Ant Financial in 2015, has struggled for relevance in recent years amid Meituan’s dominance of and Douyin’s entrance into the local services sector. The Amap and Koubei teams will work together to integrate the two products in the next quarter and to explore the post-merger business’ direction, the report added. Koubei’s head of business Zhang Liang will report directly to Amap COO Guo Ning as part of the merger, LatePost reported. [LatePost, in Chinese]
