The rotating president of Huawei, Xu Zhijun, claimed at an internal event in February that the Chinese telecoms giant has achieved a breakthrough with its own electronic design automation (EDA) tool, a key step toward developing its own 14nm and above chips, Chinese media outlet Caixin reports. The Huawei DA tool team has been partnering with other Chinese EDA companies to complete the replacement of 78 software and hardware development tools that were originally developed by US and European manufacturers and are now subject to export controls. Huawei was a major focus of the US’s tightening of restrictions on chip-related technologies in 2019, forcing the firm to increase its own R&D production lines for hardware, software, and chip development.
