A social media account that appears to represent an upcoming luxury brand by BYD went live on Tuesday on Chinese Twitter-style microblogging service Weibo, indicating an imminent launch by the electric vehicle giant as part of its efforts to go upmarket. The profile, with the handle “Fang Cheng Bao” in Chinese pinyin and registered in the southern Guangdong province, has yet to send any messages or interact with its 1,443 fans, based on a TechNode reporter’s observations on Wednesday. The move comes after Shenzhen BYD Auto R&D Co., Ltd., one of the EV maker’s fully-owned subsidiaries, changed its corporate name into Shenzhen Fangchengbao Automobile Sales Co., Ltd. on May 19. BYD announced plans last November to set up a premium marque that “specializes in professional and personalized identities,” in addition to its existing luxury brands Yangwang and Denza.
