Alibaba Cloud to support live broadcast of 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo – SCMP

What happened: The cloud computing arm of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba partnered with the host broadcaster of the Olympic Games to launch a cloud computing-based system for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Alibaba Cloud will be part of the infrastructure that Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) is trying to set up for the live broadcast of the international multi-sports event.

Why it’s important: According to OBS statistics, the amount of programming required by global broadcasters during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janerio grew 10 times more than the volume required at the 2004 event in Athens. Cloud computing technology allows companies to distribute digital resources as an on-demand service. Apart from partnering with OBS, Alibaba is also a presenting partner of the Fifa World Cup until 2020.
