Alibaba has led a $60 million Series C+ in Chinese augmented reality glasses maker Nreal, according to Nreal’s Wednesday statement. The current round will increase Nreal’s total investment received over the past 12 months to $200 million. Nreal was founded in 2017 by former Magic Leap engineer Xu Chi, who was once accused by the US AR startup of stealing the company’s secret. The case was dropped after a US judge ruled in Nreal’s favor. Alibaba, which is also the backer of Magic Leap, joined Chinese tech giants like Tencent and ByteDance, in betting on metaverse-related projects. [Nreal press release, in Chinese]
