TSMC announced on Tuesday that it will build a second fab in Arizona for 3nm chips, raising its investment from $12 billion to $40 billion. President Biden billed the move as “the largest foreign investment in the history of this state.” The two under construction plants will generate $10 billion in revenue per year, according to Mark Liu, chairman of TSMC. The project is due to produce 4nm chips in 2024 and 3nm chips in 2026. Leading chip design firms Apple, Nvidia, and AMD confirmed on Tuesday that they would be the first to have their chips produced in the new Arizona fabs. TSMC is the top semiconductor contractor in the world, accounting for 56% of the global foundry market and four times the share of second-placed Samsung in the second quarter of this year, Counterpoint Research’s data shows.
