Alibaba’s e-commerce platform Taobao recently launched a budget shopping section called 99 Temai, which is currently only accessible to some of its users, according to local media outlet The Paper. The feature is expected to be rolled out to all Taobao users by the end of April. The channel, visible on the main page of Taobao, features budget goods costing from RMB 1 to RMB 9.9 ($1.44), and offers free delivery. The move intensifies a price war among online shopping platforms including e-commerce giant JD, and Pinduoduo, which has been selling low-priced goods for years. JD kicked off an RMB 10 billion subsidy campaign covering digital products and home appliances in early March this year. [The Paper, in Chinese]
