Alibaba is embarking on a reorganization that will bring its autonomous driving research team under the purview of Cainiao, the logistics arm of the Chinese tech giant, in a move that underscores the difficulties of success in the self-driving space. A company spokesperson confirmed the news to TechNode on Monday, without commenting further. As first reported by Chinese media publication Redplanx on May 12, the decision comes after team leader Chen Junbo stepped down in March, just over a year after his predecessor Wang Gang resigned to start his own business in December 2021. Alibaba set up its autonomous driving research lab under its DAMO Academy back in 2018 and launched a low-speed delivery robot two years later. It currently operates around 500 robots in university campuses and residential areas nationwide. [TechNode reporting, Redplanx, in Chinese]
